It can be all too easy to assume that the answer is no; after all, it’s not as if a dental prosthesis can get cavities. The simple truth of the matter, however, is that routine dental checkups are as important for denture-wearers as they are for anyone else. Below are 4 key reasons why you should still make room in your schedule for regular dental appointments even after getting dentures.

1. Thorough Cleanings

It can be all too easy for plaque and tartar to build up on your dentures as well as your gum tissue. Left unchecked, these harmful substances can lead to gum disease, which in turn can increase your risk for heart problems and other serious systemic issues. If you want to maintain excellent oral hygiene to protect your oral health, you should keep up with your regular dental appointments. Your dentist can give your dentures and your gums a thorough cleaning in order to get rid of any plaque and tartar they find.

2. Oral Cancer Screenings

During a routine dental checkup, your dentist can check your mouth for warning signs of oral cancer. This disease is responsible for thousands of deaths every year, but it’s generally much easier to treat if it’s identified early on. Continuing to see the dentist even after getting dentures can improve your chances of having oral cancer caught long before it reaches its most advanced stages.

3. Necessary Adjustments

When all of your teeth are missing, bone loss in your jaw can cause your gums to change shape over time. Consequently, even a well-made denture may not fit as well as it used to after several years. Regular dental appointments give your dentist an opportunity to check how well your prosthesis currently fits. If any problems are found, it may be possible to make adjustments to your dentures to help them sit snugly and comfortably on the gums again.

4. Maintenance

Seeing your dentist regularly can be an important step in making sure your dentures remain in good condition for as long as possible. Not only can your dentist identify and address damaged areas, but they can also give you advice for properly maintaining your prosthesis on a daily basis.

In short, if you want to protect your dentures and your overall health, then you should continue to make a point of visiting your dentist at least once every six months even after all of your teeth have been replaced.

About the Author

Dr. Robert De Rosso went to the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston.
